MATH WORKSHOP

Accountable Talk Poster

Accountable Talk Sentence Starters

Math is all about noticing patterns and relationships in numbers and geometric objects. Along with concepts focusing on numbers and operations, geometry, fractions, measurement, and data, we will also learn how to think and reason using the 8 Mathematical Practices.

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  4. Model with mathematics.

  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

  6. Attend to precision.

  7. Look for and make use of structure.

  8. Look for and make sense of regularity in repeated reasoning.

This will be a year for your child to grow as a thinker and communicator of mathematics.

How can you help at home?

  • Let your child know that you believe in his or her math abilities.
  • Find ways to help your child discover math in everyday situations.
  • Play games that involve numbers and/or spacial reasoning, for example, Yahtzee, Set, Rummikub, Uno, Rush Hour, or Connect 4.

Bedtime Math provides a question you and your child can talk about each day, kind of like sharing a bedtime story, only it's bedtime math!
